Prayer: My Consent to the Father's Will/Purpose (1 Chron. 17:16-27)

Scripture Reading:- John 6:39; 1 Chronicles 17:16-27

Consent

    • A voluntary agreement to participate in an activity. It usually involves two parties. It is very important because it's about communication and respect.
    • it is revocable
    • it is ongoing
    • it is not assumed
    • it is clear
    • it can be verbal or non-verbal
    • it is mutual
    • it is not an excuse.
    • it usually involves two parties

The Will/purpose of the Father?

  • Pastor Folarin taught two weeks ago about the will of God
    • Summary of the message
      • God’s will is for all men to come to salvation.
  • The perfect vs. the permissive will
    • Permissive Will:- This is what He allows to happen, even if He doesn’t enjoy it. The story of Job. The story of Adam and Eve, Jesus Christ coming to die and becoming a propitiation to us all.
      • Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” James 1:16-18 NKJV
    • Perfect will:- His perfect plan for the welfare of all people, and is free from suffering, disease, and death.
    • For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
      • Plans and thoughts
      • peace
      • future
      • a hope
      • not evil-minded
      • “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:1-2 NKJV
    • So what is the perfect will of God?
      • For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”” Matthew 12:50 NKJV
      • God’s will is His Sovereign control (Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent)
    • What does it look like?
      • He reveals His will to us in different ways
      • There’s no set rule, but He always confirms it.

Sometimes, the will of God comes with “Disappointments” (explain the word disappointments). As believers,

  • How do we handle these disappointments?
  • Main Text: - 1 Chronicles 17:16-27
    • Summary: David had great intentions by doing what was right in building a house for the ark of God. Unfortunately, God has other ideas.
    • He (David) reveals his intentions to Nathan; vv. 1-2
    • God’s reply through the Prophet Nathan vv. 4 -
      • A crushing, unexpected answer to a promising idea
    • But David’s response is our take-home for the week vv. 16-
      • A classic David poem vv. 16 -Who am I, O Lord God?
      • He sings praise to God
      • Offer thanks for God’s blessings
      • Re-affirming all the promises of God
    • A similar situation with Job;  Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.” In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.” Job 1:20-22 NKJV
    • The Life of Jesus Christ
      • This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.” John 6:39 NKJV
      • saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.” Luke 22:42-43 NKJV

How do we consent/react/respond to these disappointments in prayer?

    • Being humble vv. 16 - Then King David went in and sat before the LORD
    • Understand our role vv. 19
    • Not giving into worldly temptation: 1 Samuel 8:19-20
    • Being obedient 1 Samuel 15:22
    • Being vulnerable
      • The Life of Jabez, 1 Chronicles 4:9-10
      • The Life of Jacob, Genesis 32:22-32
    • Be Thankful: “in everything, give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV

In conclusion

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 NKJV
